The Complete Guide to Mouth Taping
How the nightly cue works, how to start comfortably, and when the right answer is not to tape.
Start with one non-negotiable
Use mouth tape only if you are an adult who can already breathe comfortably through your nose. It does not open a blocked airway or treat a sleep disorder.

01 · Understand the starting point
Mouth breathing at night
A mouth falling open during sleep can be a habit, but it can also happen because nasal breathing is difficult or a sleep problem needs attention. Mouth tape cannot identify or fix the underlying cause.
If your nose feels blocked—or you gasp, choke, or have pauses in breathing—skip the tape and speak with a qualified clinician.
02 · The physical cue
How mouth tape works
SleepSealed is a physical cue placed across naturally closed lips to discourage them from drifting open. It does not deliver air, open a blocked nose, or treat a medical condition.
Lips close naturally
One strip is applied
Comfort remains the test
03 · Context, not a promise
The nasal-breathing context
Your nose warms, humidifies, and filters incoming air. That basic physiology does not prove that mouth tape will improve sleep or make it suitable for everyone.
The essential starting condition is simpler: nasal breathing must already feel clear and comfortable before a strip is applied.
04 · Application
A calm, deliberate first application
Use one strip only on clean, dry, intact skin. Comfortable nasal breathing must already be clear before you apply it.
- 1
Check that your nose feels clear and breathing feels easy.
- 2
Start with clean, dry, intact skin around the mouth.
- 3
Close your lips naturally. Do not clamp or force them together.
- 4
Place one strip across the naturally closed lips without forcing the mouth shut. Do not continue if the fit is uncomfortable.
- 5
Remove it immediately if breathing or comfort changes.
05 · Start comfortably
Your first night is not a test of willpower
Before sleeping in a strip, become familiar with how it feels and how quickly you can remove it while awake. Restriction, panic, breathing difficulty, pain, or skin discomfort means stop.
A successful start feels uneventful.
You should not need to fight through distress or convince yourself that discomfort is normal.
06 · Fit and skin
Facial hair and sensitive skin
Facial hair
SleepSealed is designed to work with stubble, moustaches and facial hair when centered across the lips and anchored to clean, dry skin. Placement may need adjustment depending on your growth pattern.
Sensitive skin
SleepSealed is designed for most skin types, but skin response varies. Patch-test first if you are sensitive, use only on clean, dry, intact skin, and stop if irritation occurs.
07 · Know when to stop
When not to use mouth tape
- You cannot breathe comfortably through your nose.
- You are congested or breathing feels difficult.
- You cannot remove the strip independently and promptly.
- You feel nauseated, have been vomiting, or may regurgitate during sleep.
- Alcohol, sedatives, illness, or another condition may impair waking or removal.
- The skin around your mouth is broken or irritated.
- You are not an adult.
- You have suspected or diagnosed sleep apnea without clinician guidance.
- You feel restriction, panic, pain, or another unusual symptom.
08 · The hard boundary
Sleep apnea and CPAP
SleepSealed is not a treatment for sleep apnea and is not a substitute for CPAP or medical care. Never stop, reduce, or alter prescribed therapy because of mouth tape.
Research remains limited, and people do not respond uniformly. In small studies involving people with obstructive sleep apnea, mouth closure worsened airflow or oxygen-desaturation measurements in some participants. This is why mouth tape should not be used to self-treat snoring or sleep apnea.
If you have diagnosed or suspected sleep apnea, or currently use CPAP, ask your treating clinician before using mouth tape or combining it with your treatment.
09 · Removal and troubleshooting
Slow is better than abrupt
Lift one edge and peel slowly rather than pulling abruptly. Remove the strip immediately and stop use if you experience breathing difficulty, gasping, choking, panic, significant pain, rash, or swelling of the lips, face, or tongue. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, significant swelling, or another emergency.
Poor hold
Start with clean, completely dry skin and adjust placement for facial hair. Do not stack strips or force a seal.
Skin discomfort
Remove the strip. Do not reapply to red, painful, itchy, broken, or irritated skin.
Breathing changes
Remove it immediately. Mouth tape cannot make a blocked nose safe to breathe through.
